Do Two Twins Make a King Mattress?

If you're coupled up, you may be looking for ways to sleep close to your partner while still having some personal space to stretch out and breathe. If this sounds like you, you've probably wondered whether or not you can just push two twin beds together and call it a king.

In this article, we'll help answer common questions like:

  • What size mattress is two twin beds together?
  • How does a split king mattress differ from two twins?
  • Why do couples love split king beds so much?
  • What size mattress is right for me?

Combining Two Twins vs. Two Twin XLs

A twin size mattress (38" by 75") vs. a twin XL mattress (38" by 80").

So, do two twin beds make a king mattress? Almost, but not quite. Two twin beds are the same width as a king mattress (38"), but you'll end up with a bed that's five inches shorter than what you expect. In our experience, it's a little too small for couples—especially if you're on the taller side.

On the other hand, a twin XL mattress is an excellent option if you're looking for a bed that's long but not too wide. Measuring 80 inches in length, twin XL mattresses are perfect for taller sleepers who find a standard twin to be too short. And when two twin XL mattresses are side by side, they have the exact dimensions of a king mattress.

While you might think you're clever for DIYing a king, this type of bed actually has a name: it's a split king. (And it's one of our best-sellers!)

Two twin XL size mattresses (76" by 80" total) compared to a king size mattress (76" by 80").

Why Consider Two Separate Mattresses?

You know what's best for yourself, but sometimes your partner views things differently. Suppose you want the perfect king sized mattress with two different levels of firmness or contouring. In that case, two separate twin XL mattresses may be right up your alley.

Split beds are fantastic for couples as they offer each sleeper the ultimate in fully customizable sleep. Pair your split king with an adjustable bed base and your ability to curate the perfect sleep situation becomes as easy as the touch of a button.

Some couples worry about potential cons with split king adjustable beds, specifically the gap in the center of the bed. We're here to tell you that cuddling is still totally possible on a split king. Most people do not feel any sort of gap. If you do, there are plenty of solutions that can help!

What to Look for in a Split King Bed

Does a split king bed sound like something you'd like? Mattresses these days are easy to find, but they're not all created equal. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Layers. As you start to shop for a mattress, you'll notice that they all include a few different layers. The types of material used, as well as the order of the layers, will make a difference in the feel of the mattress. A memory foam comfort layer at the top, for example, will offer a soft, contouring feel when you first lay down.
  • Firmness. How you perceive a mattress's firmness can vary from person to person, depending on your body type and weight. If you and your partner have drastically different body types, this might factor into your preferences.
  • Favorite sleep position. Everyone has their favorite sleep position and this factors into what you need in a mattress. Side sleepers need cushioning on their pressure points, for example, while back sleepers need solid support to keep their spine aligned.
