We're all short on time these days, and loading your sheets into your washer with towels, sweaters and blankets may sound like a tempting time-saving measure.

But hear us out.

If you're investing in a set of high-quality cooling sheets, why not take the best care of them? While you technically can wash your sheets with clothes and other garments, we recommend keeping them separate.

3 Reasons to Wash Your Sheets Separately

Washing your sheets with other clothes one time isn't going to ruin them, but we don’t recommend getting into the habit of it. There are several benefits to giving your sheets a little extra attention in the wash.

Washing sheets separately…

  • Cuts down on tangles. Washing sheets separately ensures that other items don't get tangled or balled up inside of them. This is especially important for delicate items like lingerie and baby clothes.
  • Extends the life of your bedding. Some fabrics will grind against your silky soft sheets like sandpaper, encouraging pilling and wearing them out faster.
  • Keeps things fresh and clean. Combining your sheets with heavily soiled items from other areas of the house (think: kitchen towels) isn't the best idea. Cleaning your sheets separately will also allow you to use gentler detergents, which is a good idea if you have sensitive skin.

Should You Wash New Sheets Separately From Clothes?

It's important to consider what kind of chemicals are used in the packaging of your bed linens if you're not buying sheets from a reputable source. Surprisingly, some manufacturers will use formaldehyde to keep bugs and moths away from the sheets while they travel through the supply chain. This can be harmful to your family's health, so it's essential to look for bed sheets that are certified to be safe, such as those with an OEKO-TEX® label.

If you bought new sheets and suspect they may have chemicals on them, definitely wash them separately from your other clothes the first few times to avoid spreading them to children's garments, underclothes and other fabrics that come in contact with delicate skin.

Care for Your Sheets, and They’ll Take Care of You

We know, we know. Washing your sheets separately means an extra load of laundry each week. But if you spend a bit of extra time now ensuring your sheets are well cared for, you will be rewarded with ultra-luxurious sheets that will feel amazing for years to come.
